Semarang, 25 June 2025 — PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero), or Pelindo, is set to establish a strategic partnership with the SDGs Center — a unit under the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP) — to conduct a biodiversity assessment in the coastal areas surrounding Tanjung Mas Port in Semarang and Batang Port. An initial meeting to discuss the collaboration details is scheduled for Friday, July 25, 2025, at 10:00 AM (WIB), at UNDIP’s Integrated Laboratory Unit in Tembalang, Semarang.

This initiative is driven by the urgent need for accurate scientific data to support adaptive and sustainable port ecosystem management. Currently, information regarding the biodiversity status and environmental quality of waters surrounding the ports remains limited, while port activities — including integration with industrial zones — pose potential risks of pollution and habitat degradation. The collaboration aims to establish a scientific database to serve as the foundation for evidence-based policy-making that balances the ports’ economic functions with ecosystem sustainability.

The assessment will involve identification and inventory of marine and coastal biota, including key vegetation such as seagrass and mangroves, followed by analysis of physical, chemical, and biological parameters — such as temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, and heavy metal content. Biodiversity indices will be calculated using ecological approaches such as the Shannon-Wiener and Simpson indices, and biota distribution maps will be developed using Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping technologies.

The key outcome of this study will be a comprehensive scientific report that presents the status of biodiversity, water quality, and spatial ecological zoning maps within the study area. The report will also include infographics and visual summaries to facilitate communication with the public and policymakers. Additionally, the research team will formulate strategic recommendations for sustainable port environmental management, including the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into Pelindo’s operational governance.

The assessment will be carried out by a team of experts from the SDGs Center – LPPM UNDIP with multidisciplinary expertise. The team includes: Prof. Dr. Denny Nugroho Sugianto, S.T., M.Si., serving as the Project Coordinator and a marine and oceanography expert; Dessy Ariyanti, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., a water quality expert; Prof. Dr. Ir. Munasik and Prof. Dr. Ir. Muhammad Zainuri, both aquatic ecology experts; and Dr. Jumari, a marine biodiversity specialist.

Through this collaboration, Pelindo and Universitas Diponegoro hope to promote port management practices that are not only economically productive but also environmentally adaptive. It is expected that the findings of this assessment will not only serve as an important reference for the management of Tanjung Mas and Batang Ports but also become a model for other ports across Indonesia in integrating sustainability principles into national maritime development.
